VDV and BME Rail Freight Forum: Promoting rail transport with perseverance and imagination
The transport and logistics industry started the new year with positive momentum at the traditional 18th BME/VDV Rail Freight Forum in Berlin – despite the current recession and cost increases for using the railway lines. VDV Vice President Joachim Berends told CARGO FREIGHT JOURNAL: “When it comes to the railway, we must not think in short time frames when it comes to the approval of new infrastructure, financing, and maintaining the existing network. And that was the topic here.”

BALM: slight upturn in freight transport until 2026
The German Federal Office for Mobility and Logistics (BALM) has published its moving medium-term forecast for the development of freight transport from 2024 to 2026. The basis is assumptions about geopolitical and economic developments. The authors are employees of Intraplan Consult, the client is the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV).
VPI: Rail freight transport needs further modernisation of the infrastructure
With over 450 guests, the traditional New Year’s reception of the Association of Freight Car Owners in Germany e.V. (VPI) set a new attendance record. At the 14th VPI Symposium on the following January 9th, the modernisation of the infrastructure and combined transport were the focus of the debates.
German freight railways are demanding a reorganisation of the track booking process
The network of non-federally owned freight railways in Germany NEE has accused the administrator of the federal railway infrastructure, Deutsche Bahn Netz, of performing an “emergency stop on rail network framework agreements”. The German federal government and the Bundestag should now “seize the opportunity to implement the Deutschlandtakt concept properly”.
