In the past few years, Hungary has made a huge leap forward, in terms of infrastructure, facilities and services. Hungary should be placed on the international rail freight map once again, is the consensus, and there is no time to waste. Technology plays a key role in this: state-of-the-art terminals are built and digitalisation will lead the way. Budapest is no longer the only hub in the country.
The programme at Debrecen started with a special site tour programme to the Fényeslitke East-West Gate Terminal. During this visit attendees experienced the 3D terminal operating system, 5D network, crane operation and much more. The day ended with a dinner at terminal. The second day concentrates on lessons and debates. Session I deals with Chances, Opportunities & Regional focus” “In this session we look at the regional chances and opportunities of Hungary and how the country has developed itself on the international rail freight map”, the organisers explain. Topics are: Infrastructure plans/upgrades, Track Access Charges, Public vs private investment.
Session II includes issues such as: Hungary on the New Silk Road. Connection to Ukraine, the Position in Europe/TENT-T corridors and the visibility in China. Session III: Hubs and cargo – Technology plays a key role in the development of Hungary as a rail freight hub: state-of-the-art terminals are built and digitalisation will lead the way. The final session includes the following topics: 5G technology, Important industrial customers/regions, The East-West Gate.
Debrecen is a good place to settle such an event. Already some years ago, the city of Debrecen had rail freight traffic of 220,000 tonnes a year. The Debrecen airport has a direct rail cargo connection and innovation centre at the airport. hfs
